ID Spacers

Benefits 

ID Spacers have been designed to assist in the realignment of the foot to its natural shape, to stretch and allow space for strength in the intricate foot muscles and to improve the mobility of the foot’s bone structure.

As Irish Dancers, we like our feet to look neat and tidy and are guilty of squeezing our feet, our most valuable tool, into shoes that are sizes too small for us. Although this makes our feet look tidier, have you considered the impact that this is having on the structure of your feet and therefore your ability to dance your best consistently? 

Irish dance shoes impact our foot's flexibility and mobility and therefore our strength is reduced/restricted which can impact our ability to arch, dance on our toes, turn out and also increases our risk of injury. 

Over my 5 years of working with Irish Dancers, I have noticed a clear pattern in injury, not only the types of injury that are most common but also the time of year/season that they tend to occur. 

This got me into researching what we could be doing to help to prevent these injuries and I came across studies focusing on toe spacer tools. The deeper I got into my research, the more intrigued and excited I became! I started using them myself and began noticing great differences after struggling with my calves for all of my dancing life and still now. 

Following the World Championships, 2022, I had 2 dancers fracture metatarsal bones, and in the weeks following another came to light. That is 3 out of 45 dancers, this doesn’t seem like a good statistic. Throughout their recovery, I encouraged the use of ID Spacers, on the good foot to begin with and, then when healed enough, on the bad foot too. Both dancers saw great results and continue wearing their ID Spacers as much as possible. 

How to use your ID Spacers: 

• Big toe in the biggest hole 
• Wavy side pointing towards you
• Smooth side facing away from you 
• Wear barefoot or in crocs after class 
• Start with 10-15 minutes sitting down and increase and add more movement as you feel more comfortable
